With a focus on ‘sport for life’, this adult-oriented program delivers fun, fitness, and opportunities to improve your skating to whatever goal you are pursuing – from the fun and basics of speed skating through “masters” category competitions.
AGE & ABILITY: We always have a mix of abilities including those who are trying the sport through to accomplished athletes who compete regionally and beyond in some cases. Our program members commonly range in age between 20-70 but age is not a limiting factor in this program.
SAFETY: We manage safety as a top priority including minimum equipment requirements including helmet and neck protector and gloves, safety pads line the boards, you are guided by experienced coaches, and we divide skaters into groups of similar skating abilities so everyone thrives at a pace they can handle.
SKATES: Everyone skates with long-blade skates. Our learn-to-speed-skate trial program includes long-blade skate rentals. Those deciding to join the club can rent skates from the club or purchase from outside the club. Coaches and our equipment team are available to support rental skate fitting and can provide guidance on skate purchase selection upon request.
PROGRAMMING: Includes off-ice and on-ice technique work along with strength/endurance workouts. Coaching is by volunteers with considerable experience in the sport and you can expect feedback tailored to your level of skating and the amount of feedback you’d like to receive.
SOCIAL: Importantly, we have a lot of fun and enjoy socializing with each other including at the rink and elsewhere – it’s a great, and welcoming group of people.
PREREQUISITES: Our program offers a low barrier to entry but the program is not well suited to people who have no skating background – the City of Ottawa and other organizations offer “learn-to-skate” programs to get started. If you’ve got some skating experience (i.e. hockey, figure skating, or just a good basic ability to skate from recreational skating – such as starting, stopping, and turning) and are comfortable trying something new, then we can make it a good experience.
