LONG TRACK

Long Track Programs
Long track skating takes place at the Brewer Park Oval (off Bronson Avenue, across from Carleton University). The oval is 400 metres; laps are skated counter-clockwise. The season is weather-dependent; it usually starts the first week of January and ends the last week of February.

Trial speed skate: During "trial" sessions you will be taught the basics. Dates for sessions will be announced closer to the season start.

Coaches are available at the oval from Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm (subject to change). The training program is posted in the change hut and can be self-directed. Typically the masters group selects two nights that they will skate together.

Off-Ice Training
From May through December, we have a dryland training session on Monday nights. This is a coach-led session that runs from 6:15 to 8:15 pm (outdoors).

Equipment
Unlike short track skating, there is no mandatory safety equipment. Wearing a helmet, knee pads and glasses/goggles is recommended. Some skaters also wear shin guards, which have the the added bonus of reducing cold from the wind.

To help keep feet warm, many skaters wear neoprene boot covers. Ask skaters at the oval for ideas on what type of skate covers there are.

Skates
Although long track skates are designed differently than short track skates, beginning skaters often wear their short track skates on the oval. Check with the club for possible rental skates. If you wish to buy your own skates but aren't sure what to buy or from where, come and chat with members - we'll gladly provide suggestions.
