Rob suspended competition in 1984 to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree but continued to coach for the Pacers. He moved to Calgary in 1986 and in 1989 was 5th overall in the Alberta Provincial Trials. A year later he placed first overall, setting Alberta records for 1000m 1:17.46 and 1500m 1:59.07. As a Builder he coached in 1984 and was Assistant Coach for the Junior Canadians, (Regina, SK). He attained the CASSA Level 2 coaching certificate, was the Provincial Skaters Representative and an ISAO director. In 1985 he coached in Edmonton and in 1986 coached KW Sertoma short track. In 1987 he coached short track in Calgary. He was invited to coach the Heilonliang Provincial short track team for two months (People's Republic of China). In 1988 he worked coaches clinics in Sudbury and Calgary. Rob's skating and coaching activities with so many Canadian speed skating clubs qualifies him as a builder as well as an athlete. |
