David was a competitive skater for twelve years with the Pacers and was on
the Ontario team from 1985 to 1990. He missed being named to the
National team by a rule change the year he became eligible.
David
was the skaters representative in 1984/1985 and also represented the Pacers
at the Ontario Speed Skating Association. In 1992 David produced a
“how to” manual for Master Skaters covering all the basic technique and
illustrated by “stick figures with big hips”.
1982 David started winning meets as a junior.
1983 came first in the Lake Placid International. He was Ontario
short track junior champion and earned bronze in the North American
championships.
1984 he was the Ontario Olympic style junior men's champion. He
also won the Winterlude Triathlon that year.
1985 won the Ontario Winter Games 800 m for senior men and also won
overall gold in Canada’s Capital Indoor. He was on the Ontario team
for the National Team Competitions.
1986 took silver in the Ontario Championships. In the Junior
Canadian Championships he was the top Ontario athlete and set records in the
1500m, 3000m, and 5000m distances. In short track he won the Ontario
Championship.
1988 won gold at Canada’s Capital Outdoor (Olympic style).
1989 he qualified for the Ontario Team to the North Americans.
David then entered the University of Alberta in Calgary but as noted above
hopes of being named to the National team did not materialize.
